BAILEY, June Kathleen Elayne (nee Smithson) – Passed away peacefully at Crown Ridge Nursing Home on Thursday, January 5, 2017 in her 87th year. Beloved wife of the late Dr. W. Stuart Bailey for 63 years. Adored mother of Mark Bailey, Kathryn Roe and her husband Mark all of Burlington. Cherished grandmother of Robert, Katy, Bailey and her grand-dog Jasper. Loved by her nephew and nieces, Brian Bailey, Susan Grace and Carol Gagnon and their extended families. Predeceased by her parents Earl and Kathleen Smithson and her sister Audrey Smithson, all of Toronto.
June was born and raised in Toronto. She graduated from Etobicoke High School at the age of 16 having (skipped) 2 grades as they used to allow at that time. Universities weren’t admitting students that young, so she went to work as a reporter for (The Advertiser) newspaper where she had her own regular columns: (In Tune with June) and (Personality of the Week) which gave her the opportunity to interview interesting people. She also wrote for radio shows of the time and eventually her creative talents and writing skills led her to a job at the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency in Toronto. She met the love of her life Stu on a blind date when he was a Queen’s medical student in 1950 and they married in 1953. She traded in her advertising career to move to Trenton with Dad and start a family while Dad set up his medical practice. Mom was the original (TAS) (Telephone Answering Service) and took calls day and night for Dad’s practice and also helped out in the office. When Dad was on call, at evening office hours or delivering babies she kept the home fires burning, helping with homework, taking Kathy to dance and piano lessons and Mark to hockey practice and games, attending parent teacher interviews, school performances and so on. She was always there for all of us. She served on the Trenton Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxilliary and took on other volunteer roles in the Trenton community throughout the years. As a tireless advocate, she was instrumental in the creation of a local chapter of the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (ACLD) and wrote their (Communique) newsletter for a number of years. She was an avid reader, loved a good (whodunit) and with her great sense of humour, sometimes mischievous, she always loved a good joke. She also loved entertaining and travelling, especially trips to Hawaii where she went a number of times with friends and family alike. She patiently awaited grandchildren whom she adored and we all shared in the privilege of her and (Boppa Stu) being a big loving part of their lives growing up. She often said she was (happiest when she was surrounded by her family). She taught her children and grandchildren about the strength that comes from quiet perseverance and grace in the face of life’s challenges which she has demonstrated in these recent years. Mom, the memory of your beautiful, reassuring smile brings us all comfort. We will all miss you while we let you go, knowing you are again in the arms of your loving Stu.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to all of the staff at Crown Ridge for their kind and compassionate care of June and their wonderful help and ongoing support of the Bailey family. The family will receive friends at the Weaver Family Funeral Home – 29 Bay St., Trenton on Sunday, January 8, 2017, Visitation from 12:30 to 2 PM followed by the Funeral Ceremony Rev. Ed Bentley officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will take place Monday Jan 9, 2017 at the Carrying Place Annex Cemetery.
